Our new study reveals toxin exposure patterns

What the study is about

We rarely encounter just one environmental toxin at a time and we’re frequently exposed to solvents, pesticides, and industrial chemicals together. Our study looked at urine samples from 551 patients at Breakspear Medical who were being assessed for conditions linked to environmental exposures, such as chronic fatigue, allergies, and recurrent infections.

Three patterns of co-exposure

Using statistical modelling, we identified three consistent “clusters” of co-occurring toxicants:

● Solvent/industrial: xylene & styrene byproducts (found in paints, plastics, and fuel/exhaust-related sources)
● Pesticide/solvent: herbicide & pesticide byproducts
● Mitochondrial/fuel: a marker of cellular stress alongside a petrol additive byproduct, hinting at a possible link between fuel exposure and mitochondrial function

Why this matters methodologically

Importantly, we also determined that these patterns held up after accounting for age and sex differences between patients, staying essentially the same. That’s a meaningful methodological finding as it means that these co-exposure patterns are more likely to reflect real, shared sources of exposure rather than just statistical noise from group differences in the sample.

Every one of these toxicant clusters was identified from a simple urine sample. The takeaway for clinicians is that rather than looking at toxicant levels one at a time, it may be more informative to look at the pattern a patient’s results fall into.
