Breakspear Medical's sauna
For over two thousand years, the idea of increasing the body’s temperature has been attributed with healing, preventative, and cleansing properties. Sauna is used to boost metabolism as pulse rates increase, blood vessels become much more flexible, extremities benefit from increased circulation and toxins are excreted through sweat and on the breath.

In our dry sauna, patients may lie in on the wooden benches and control the temperature with a simple dial. As the body’s temperature increases, blood vessels dilate, and circulation in the skin increases. As resistance to blood flow through the veins and capillaries drops, one’s blood pressure goes down and then the heart rate increases to keep blood pressure normal.

Aside from the de-toxing rejuvenating qualities of sauna, some people mention a feeling of psychological contentment. Sauna raises the temperature of the surface of the body while our Iratherm bed raises one’s core temperature; some people find this rise in core temperature uncomfortable and may prefer the lesser intensity of the sauna.

After the sauna, there are private shower facilities just steps away and fresh towels and robes provided.

Sauna treatment can be used for:

  • arterial hypertension
  • muscle tension
  • chronic back pain
  • fibromyalgia syndrome
  • neuralgia
  • migraine
  • chronic inflammatory disorders
  • chronic rhinitis
  • bronchial asthma
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (a depressive disorder, which can occur in the winter)
  • rehabilitation in sports medicine
  • detoxing in people who have been exposed to pollutants
  • chronic viral illnesses
Some basic tips before entering the sauna:
  • If you sauna has been recommended for you and you have either heart ailments, respiratory diseases, chronic ailments or are pregnant, check first with your doctor to determine the temperature and length of time you should spend in the sauna.
  • Don't eat prior to the sauna.
  • Avoid drug use and the sauna — tranquilizers and other prescribed drugs alter the body's metabolism.
  • If you experience dizziness, problems with breathing, or a general feeling of ill health, leave the sauna immediately.
  • Be sure you drink plenty of water, to replace the water lost during perspiration.
