Nutritional Therapy Explained
Nutritional therapy can help alleviate a wide range of conditions, and assist in the recovery from many ill-health situations. It can also be used as preventative medicine.
Each person has unique dietary and nutritional requirements, depending, in part, on lifestyle and environmental factors. This uniqueness, termed biochemical individuality, is thoroughly evaluated, and is an essential part in formulating any nutritional programme. The use of functional tests, such as stool analysis, may also be part of the therapy to identify imbalances in intestinal flora and evaluate other digestive parameters. To determine an individual’s current nutritional status, a comprehensive nutritional analysis computer programme may also be used.
The therapist assesses nutritional status and functional capacity, taking into account a variety of factors, from inherited strengths and weaknesses to the influence of diet, lifestyle and environment.
As well, recommendations may include guidance on natural detoxification, methods to support digestion and absorption, procedures to promote colon health, and also the avoidance of ingestion or inhalation of allergens or toxins. Lifestyle factors such as exercise are also addressed (if appropriate).
A nutritional therapist can also offer valuable advice on nutrition for mothers and babies, particularly during the transitional phase from milk to solid foods, which is a critical point in the possible development of allergies and sensititivities.
