Food Allergy Profile

Different foods break down at different speeds, causing different toxic reactions depending upon the food and body chemistry.

There are immediate (IgE) and delayed food reactions (IgG).  Without scientific testing, it may be difficult for an individual to determine specifically to what they are reacting, especially if it is a delayed reaction that has happened after exposure to many other allergens.  That is why food allergy profiles can be useful.

Immediate Food Allergy (IgE)

Type one toxic reactions (reactions) are quite obvious. The body suffers a notable and almost instant reaction (some people can die from strawberries or crab meat).   This type of reaction is common in children and rare in adults.  With this type of reaction, frequently IgE “RAST” results will be positive and skin tests results will also often be positive.

Delayed Food Allergy (IgG)

Type two reactions are not immediate, making them almost impossible to detect without sophisticated testing.

For this type of reaction, often larger amounts of food, often in multiple feedings, are commonly needed to provoke allergic symptoms. Reactions may not occur after a single food challenge.

The allergic symptoms commonly appear 2 to 24 hours after offending foods are eaten, although symptoms that appear 48 to 72 hours later have been frequently reported.

In 20 to 30% of patients, addictive cravings and withdrawal symptoms are clinically significant. Often the foods that cause these reactions are favorite foods, which are frequently eaten, and eaten in larger quantities.

What makes this type of reaction different from the IgE reactions is that a skin test will show up IgE “RAST” negative. This is a non-IgE antibody-mediated allergic reaction to foods.
